Homewood vs. Vestavia Hills: Which Birmingham Suburb Is Right for You?
If you're moving to Birmingham, there's a good chance Homewood and Vestavia Hills are both on your shortlist. They sit right next to each other just south of downtown, both run elite city school systems, and both consistently land near the top of "best places to live in Alabama" lists. In Niche's 2026 rankings, Homewood came in at #5 and Vestavia Hills at #6, practically a tie. But spend a weekend in each and you'll notice they feel very different.
Full disclosure: my family lives in Homewood, and we've owned homes in both Hollywood and West Homewood. But I've helped plenty of buyers land in Vestavia, and for a lot of families it's the better fit. Here's how the two stack up.

Here's the headline that surprises a lot of people: Vestavia's median is actually higher than Homewood's right now, and it's appreciating faster. Vestavia also has the wider price range at both ends, from starter homes around $200K to estates over $3 million. Homewood's range is tighter because the city is small and the housing stock is more uniform.
The Vibe
Homewood feels like a small town that happens to be eight minutes from downtown. It's one of the few places around here where you can really walk to dinner, walk to coffee, and walk to school. Sidewalks are full of strollers and dog walkers, and the city's commercial districts, from Downtown Homewood to SoHo to Edgewood, are woven right into the neighborhoods.
Vestavia Hills sits on top of Shades Mountain and is classic suburbia in the best sense: bigger, hillier, more spread out, with winding streets, wooded lots, and more privacy. It's car-dependent, so it's not a walk-to-dinner kind of place. In exchange, you get space, quieter streets, and a lot of variety from one part of town to the next.
The short version: Homewood is for people who want to walk to things. Vestavia is for people who want room to breathe.
The Neighborhoods
Homewood packs a lot into about eight square miles. Three areas to know:
Edgewood is the classic Homewood neighborhood, with older homes, great walkability, and a lot of buyers' first choice.
Hollywood, on the east side of Highway 31, is full of charm and beautiful older homes.
West Homewood is where you're seeing a lot of the newer energy, with new restaurants, the pool, and parks like Patriot Park and West Homewood Park right there.
Vestavia Hills really has three different feels:
Vestavia proper has the established neighborhoods, including Altadena Valley.
Cahaba Heights has more of a village feel and is usually a bit more affordable than the rest of the city.
Liberty Park is the newer, master-planned side of Vestavia.
The Homes
Homewood housing is mostly older bungalows, cottages, Tudors, and craftsman homes on smaller lots, plus a steady stream of new construction where older homes have been torn down and rebuilt. Because the city is small and built out, there isn't much inventory, and competition for good homes is real. If you're looking in Hollywood or the historic areas, plan on a thorough inspection.
Vestavia Hills gives you more variety, more square footage, and more land: renovated mid-century ranches and split-levels, larger traditional family homes, and newer construction in Liberty Park. Homes here sell quickly too, so have your financing lined up before you start touring.
The Schools
This is the closest race of all, and honestly, you can't lose. Niche's 2026 list ranked Homewood City Schools #1 and Vestavia Hills City Schools #2 in Alabama, and nationally they placed #46 and #85, respectively. The year before, Homewood was #1 and Vestavia #4 in the state.
Homewood City Schools is a smaller system where every student feeds into one high school, which builds a tight community and is a big reason families compete so hard for homes here.
Vestavia Hills City Schools is larger, with a wide range of academic and athletic programs, and it's the main reason many families choose Vestavia.
Always verify the school zone for a specific address, especially near city borders.
Commute and Location
Homewood wins on proximity: about 8 minutes to downtown, with UAB, Lakeview, and Samford University all close by.
Vestavia runs about 20 minutes to downtown and the airport, but it's well positioned for US-280, I-459, and the Summit. If your job is along 280 or south of town, Vestavia may actually be the easier commute. It's also a popular choice for professionals who work at UAB.
Parks and Lifestyle
Homewood: Shades Creek Greenway is one of the best walking and biking paths in the metro, and Homewood Central Park, Patriot Park, and West Homewood Park stay busy year-round. Community events like football Fridays and holiday parades are a big part of life here.
Vestavia Hills: Wald Park, McCallum Park, Cahaba Heights Park, and the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex anchor a big youth sports scene. And there's a great trail behind the Library in the Forest that ends at a waterfall.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Homewood might be your fit if you:
Want to walk to restaurants, coffee, and parks
Love older homes with character (or want new construction in an established neighborhood)
Work downtown or near UAB and want a short commute
Want a top school system with a small-town feel
Vestavia Hills might be your fit if you:
Want more space, bigger lots, and more privacy
Are a move-up buyer looking for more square footage
Commute toward 280 or south of town
Want the widest range of price points, from Cahaba Heights to Liberty Park
The Bottom Line
There's no wrong answer. Both cities have top-two schools in the state, both are appreciating, and both have great communities. It comes down to how you want to live day to day. Spend a Saturday in each: grab breakfast in Homewood, walk the greenway, then drive the neighborhoods in Vestavia and Cahaba Heights in the afternoon. You'll usually know by dinner.
